Are you a member of a technical team that’s beginning its journey toward implementing HL7's Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) application program interfaces (APIs)? Then don’t miss an upcoming three-day online educational event offering two technical tracks tailored to your needs.
Two days of interactive content delivery and demonstrations will be followed by a Connectathon that will provide implementers and developers with the opportunity to test FHIR-based solutions and exchange data with other FHIR interfaces.
Organizations that want to fast-track implementing HL7 FHIR APIs to automate workflow, maximize efficiency and meet federal requirements of the CMS Interoperability and Prior Authorization Final Rule (CMS-0057-F) should encourage their technical teams attend this online event.
“We designed two tracks for technical team members at provider and payer organizations, as well as technology vendors, who are looking for a crash course on making the most of FHIR,” says Viet Nguyen, M.D., Technical Director of the HL7 Da Vinci Project. (Da Vinci has developed implementation guides for putting FHIR to use in supporting value-based medicine.)
"In addition, the Connectathon will give tech teams the opportunity to test-drive using FHIR for data exchange,” Nguyen notes. “This is a great way to gain practical insights on starting the journey toward FHIR.”
Three Tracks
The event features a two-day Payer Data Exchange Technical Track, a two-day Burden Reduction Technical Track, plus a one-day Business Track for non-technical staff (see blog on business track: Da Vinci Event Offers Hands-On Training and Testing; Business Track Highlights Strategic Opportunities of Automation with FHIR)

Technical Tracks
“The technical tracks will describe how FHIR addresses ‘burden reduction’ and payer data exchange by streamlining administrative tasks and maximizing efficiency while ensuring regulatory compliance,” Nguyen explains. Both tracks will feature open forums where attendees can discuss challenges and opportunities with their peers.”
Burden reduction sessions include:
- FHIR-Based Prior Authorization Workflows: Differences from Historical Approaches
- Approach for Achieving Conformance
- Performance Optimization Strategies
- What the Enforcement Discretion Means
- Benefits Beyond Compliance
- Open Forum
Featured payer data exchange sessions are:
- Benefits to Patients of Enabling Data Exchange from Prior Plans
- Matching Members for Payer-to-Payer Exchange
- Establishing Treatment Relationships for the Provider Access API
- Patient Access API – What’s Changed?
- Provenance: What's the Story Behind the Data?
- Open Forum
In addition to learning the benefits and strategic value of FHIR implementation, all attendees at this online event will gain the core knowledge necessary to implement the FHIR implementation guides for prior authorization, payer data exchange and provider access APIs as identified in the CMS Final Rule.
Implementers and FHIR IG authors will provide all content. They’ll offer real-world insights on a wide variety of important subjects, including:
- What you need to know from a business or technical perspective as you embark on your implementation journey and identify the critical questions you should be asking
- Key considerations when planning your implementation strategy, supporting a smooth and effective process
- Real-world success stories, including the challenges and lessons learned along the way
- Various approaches to scalability and the market options available to enhance your implementation efforts
- How to bring the technical components together for successful and scalable implementation
- How to identify resources to aid your implementation efforts, including how to jumpstart efforts to find partners through participation in testing events
Both Da Vinci and HL7 members qualify for the member-discounted registration rate. Those Da Vinci members who are not HL7 members should email meetings@HL7.org to receive a coupon code to receive the membership rates during registration.
To maximize your experience at the upcoming event and advance your FHIR implementation, additional educational offerings covering core FHIR technologies and Implementation Guides referenced in CMS-0057-F are available here.
