Introducing the HL7 Companion Guide to Consolidated Clinical Document Architecture (C-CDA®) 2.1
On March 3, 2017, Health Level Seven International and the Duteau Design Inc. team of Jean Duteau, Joginder Madra, Helen Stevens, and Lisa Nelson published the Companion Guide to Consolidated Clinical Document Architecture (C-CDA) 2.1. This companion guide is a supplement to HL7's CDA R2 Implementation Guide (IG): C-CDA Templates for Clinical Notes STU Release 2.1.
What is the C-CDA Companion Guide?
The new C-CDA Companion Guide was developed and published in order to:
- Provide additional context to assist implementers and connect them to tools and resources
- Map the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC)'s common clinical data set (CCDS) to the appropriate C-CDA locations
- Offer technical guidance for representing the 2015 Edition Certification Criteria data requirements using the C-CDA R2.1 IG
- Show clinically-valid examples of C-CDA components necessary to meet the 2015 Edition Certification Criteria requirements
- Recommend an approach to implementations using the C-CDA IG to meet the needs of clinicians and help them achieve ONC certification
How was the C-CDA Companion Guide developed?
HL7 engaged with the CDA community at our working group meetings and hosted in-person C-CDA Implementation-A-Thons to get input on how to improve implementations. Stakeholders from a variety of settings provided input, including vendors of all sizes, clinicians, ONC staff and members of the Structured Documents Work Group.
